DiskTuna 2 work in progress

So … Yesterday I have been working on DiskTuna 1.2. Or version 2. I haven’t decided yet. I worked the entire day. The evening. Until the morning 3.00 AM. What I always try, is to have a running version by the end of the (working) day. At 3.00 AM I had a running version. But is was slow as …. . And it just didn’t do what I wanted it to do.

The plan was to reduce the amount of file moves while still accomplishing a satisfactory result. I was working on the optimize where files were moved from the start of the disk (the disk’s fastest area – the outer platters). DiskTuna moves files from that area to make room for frequently accessed files and files Windows uses during the boot process. DiskTuna moves all files, even files it will move back there later on. I know from user feedback that people find that annoying, and as a matter of fact, so do I.

But I made things so complicated, and it performed so poorly, that rather than trying to fix it, I rolled back the entire project a day. Poof. An entire day, and evening and good part of the night work gone. Which may sound like a loss, but in the end, trying to fix it would probably have been an exercise in frustration. By starting again,it now does what I want it to do, and it’s ten times less complex.

So in the end I’m glad I did it. Now, when running optimize, DiskTuna leaves files alone that it would back later. Also folders (indexes) are left alone as those are moved to the disk’s fastest area as well.
